Xeriscaping at Locke Design's New Studio

At Locke Design Omnimedia we are committed to sustainable practices in our business. Sometimes this simply means reducing power consumption as best we can or printing our client’s work on paper that is sustainably forested. In late 2013 we began renovation and reconstruction on our studio and office in a 1940s historic home on North Main Street in Anderson, SC. Part of this process included removal of overgrown shrubbery and landscaping around the building. Plants selected for Locke Design’s landscaping were chosen with the rapidly changing climate in mind. Drought resistant and temperature tolerant plants were used that require little water once established along with a landscaping plan that requires little need for pesticides and herbicides to control weeds. Best of all our planting beds at Locke Design channel roof rainwater into the beds to put water where it can nourish our plantings and not be channeled into the storm sewers and wasted. Rocks excavated from the property are also used to channel and slow the force of storm water runoff from the roof. Native pine straw is used to cover our beds to reduce water loss and control weeds.

Native plants have also been used as much as possible in our design because they are suited to the South Carolina climate and require less water and pest control. Annuals are presented in glazed ceramic containers to create seasonal color which again require less water. Color selections of plants with burgundy and golden hues help to unify a wide range of textures in the selected vegetation that above all is meant to be artistic while low maintenance.
