Photographing and Touring in Paris

A designer must get out and about to see the world and be inspired! New scenery inspires the mind. My wife and I were fortunate enough this summer to travel to Paris for some rest but also for some inspiration and certainly for some photography as part of our anniversary celebration. Designers must always be scouring the media, books and the environment to observe trends in the industry from colors to styles and travel to a large city yearly is a must to stay abreast of the trend of things to come.
Running on just a few hours of sleep from our flight, our trip began with a visit to Musee du Louvre to be inspired by the great masters. The next day included a walk down the Champs Elysee with a stop at the Louis Vuitton flagship store to view new trends. Then a short Metro ride to the Chateau de Vincennes that offered great opportunities for black and white images crafted from the stone edifice. A late night visit to Montmartre in the footsteps of Picasso and Dali afforded wonderful night time photographic opportunities.
Our trip also included a tour out to Mont St. Michel for some landscape and architectural photography and a day of shopping to see new trends at Dior, Channel and other stores. Yes, more looking that buying! We also rolled through the gardens of Versailles and Vaux le Vicomte in golf carts, boated on the Seine, explored Fontainebleau, and walked and walked and walked! We paid homage to the Waterlilies of Monet at Le Orangerie, photographed the Eiffel Tower and took in a ballet at the Opera Garnier. We even had time to explore and photograph the Pere Lechaise Cemeterie with a stop off at Chopin’s grave for respects.
Visiting several shopping establishments and restaurants as well as viewing multiple advertisements and logos have already inspired several logo designs and graphics for our clients. As I travel I take photographs of colors, textures, logos and advertisements that inspire me.
During our trip I also developed a new technique of slow shutter photography and painting using the motion of the camera to create abstract compositions. One recently won an award in a juried show.
In short, this designer would say to anyone “Paris is always a good idea”.
